Physical Education Teacher Training Programmes
The department of "Sport Science and Human Movement Studies" (Fb 2) at the University of Essen is one of the very few in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia which offers all five possible study programmes for becoming a physical education teacher at a school: a physical education teacher's degree for elementary schools with P.E. as a minor or major subject; P.E. as one of the two subjects which have to be studied for a teacher's degree for secondary I (5th to 10th grade) and for secondary II schools (11th to 13th grade). As a fifth programme, physical education can be studied for a teacher's degree for vocational schools. The study programmes range from 3 years (P.E. at elementary and secondary I schools) to 4 years (secondary II schools and vocational schools). Post-graduate Studies
Doctoral Studies in Physical Education and Sport Science The department does not offer any specific doctoral studies, but post-graduate students are regularly involved in various national and international research projects in the fields of Sport Pedagogy and Leisure Studies, which are conducted in close cooperation with the "Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute" and a number of other partners.
