Participation in the ISCPES World Conference, June 8-11, 2011
The institute will be represented by Prof. Naul at the ISCPES "World Conference on Physical Education and Sport: Challenges and Future Directions", which will take place at Shanghai on June 8-11, 2011. Prof. Naul is an invited keynote speaker and he will, among others, present the Dutch-German Interreg IV-Project "Healthy children in sound communities".
Vier basisschoolen machen beim EU-HCSC-Projekt in den Niederlanden mit

About 50 further pupils of groep 3 of two other basic schools at Arnhem have been tested by a Dutch-German test team with regard to their motoric learning development. Hence now there are alreay 4 basic schools from Arnhem attending this EU-project.

WGI Report 2007-2009 now published
The latest WGI Report for the years 2007-2009 has been published recently. This report informs about the current research projects of the institute such as the cross-boarder Interreg IV-project "Healthy children in sound communties" and the project "Sport in open all-day schools" in collaboration with the LSB/NRW. Furthermore we report on our activities within the topic of "Olympic Education" and on the exhibitions within the Sports culture in the Ruhr area.
We herewith would like to take the opportunity to thank all our partners and sponsors for the close and excellent cooperation.

Revitalizing Health and Physical Education
Grundy Center / Cedar Rapids / Essen, 17.5.2010
Vom 12. bis 14. Mai 2010 fand in Iowa (Grundy Center und Cedar Rapids) das Global Forum of Physical Education Pedagogy statt. Es wurde von der Northern University of Iowa / Cedar Rapids in Zusammenarbeit mit der bekannten Modellschule in Grundy Center organisiert und durchgeführt. Grundy Center ist ein lokales Modellprojekt, das gegenwärtig vom President`s Council of Physical Activity and Health als Modellprojekt an 10 weiteren Standorten in den USA implementiert wird.. 70 Wissenchaftler aus 25 Ländern wurden von den Veranstaltern eingeladen, um in Theorie und Praxis über neue Impulse zur Förderung einer Gesundheitserziehung im Rahmen des Sportunterrichts zu berichten. Neben Themen zur Einbeziehung moderner high tech Produkte in den Unterricht wurde über ausgewählte Initiativen (USA,, Hong Kong, Singapur, EU) zur kommunalen Förderung über lokale Netzwerke informiert. Roland Naul war einer der vier keynoters, der das deutsch-niederländische gkgk-Projekt und das neue EU-hcsc-Projekt vorstellte.
2nd edition of the book "Olympic education" in press
Since December 2009 the frist edition of the textbook "Olympic Education" written by Roland Naul has been sold out. A corrected, second edition is in press and will be available end of April 2010.
Cooperation between the University of Canterbury and the Willibald Gebhardt Institute
The two Olympic Study Centres, the school of sciences and physical education at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and the Willibald Gebhardt Reseach Institute at the University of Duisburg–Essen, agreed by a cooperation contract to collaborate on a world-wide survey on Olympic education.
This study will also involve partners from Brazil, Canada, China and Czech Republic. Results will be presented on behalf of the 2012- Olympic Games.
Prof. Dr. Hai Ren of the Beijing Sport University elected as International Fellow
We herewith would like to announce that the board of the institute and the board of trustees has elected Prof. Dr. Hai Ren of the Beijing Sport University and Director of the Olympic Research Centre as International Fellow of the year 2008. By this appointment he is also a member of the council
We are proud having Prof. Hai Ren as a member of our institute with his internationally well known expertise in Olympic studies and research on the Olympic Movement. We are looking forward to common research projects in the future and are glad to receive his commitment to our shared international studies.

Brussels, March 13, 2008 - EU-Commission
In cooperation with the European section of the WHO the EU-Commission "Education and Culture" appointed a European group of experts in order to develop a general concept for the EU for "Physical Activity Guidelines". The commission appointed Roland Naul of the Willibald Gebhardt Institute as member of this group for the module "teacher training".
WHO-conference: Meeting on comunity interventions to improve nutrition and physical activity, Berlin, 21-22 February 2008
On the occasion of the a.m. WHO-Conference from Feb. 21-22, 2008 the Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute presented the cross-boarder project "Healthy Children in Sound Communities" with a short lecture and a poster.
A short review on 2007
First of all we would like to wish all the best for 2008 to all our members, partners, friends and supporters.
In 2007 there were three important events to be mentioned: in November and December the institute participated in two major congresses such as: the congresses on "Olympic Education", "Challenges for football in school and sport club" and last but not least the German-Chinese congress "Peking 2008 - one year ahead to the Olympic Games".
We would like to take the opportunity and thank all persons and institutions supporting us in conducting these congresses and other important events in the anniversary year of the Willibald Gebhardt Institute.
Furthermore we would like to thank all those partners who helped us to keep the cross-boarder project "Healthey children in sound communities" in progress and supported us in the evaluation study on movement, games and sport in all-day schools.
Olympic education and Children and Youth football
After having started the 15th anniversary of the institute with the event "Europe and Germany - a strong team in Sports" in May 2007, the series of events will becontinued in November 2007. On November 2 - 3, 2007 a congress on Olympic Education with international lecturers will take place at the Sportschloss Velen. As guest lecturers several well-known professors from Canada, Poland and Czechia could be attracted. Furthermore, the presidents of the National Olympic Academies of Belgium, the Netherlands and Austria will attend this conference and report on projects for the Olympic Year 2008. The "Olympic Values-Project" of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be presented as well as the long-term activites on training and further education in Olympic education of the IOA of Olympia, Greece.
On November 22 - 24, 2007 the WGI will organise in cooperation with the University of Duisburg-Essen the dvs football congress themed " Challenge for football in school and sport club", which will take place in the sport congress centre Kamen-Kaiserau.
Velen: The local network
Velen, August 2, 2007 As the first community the community of Velen (Germany) starts with the pilot phase of the local EU-network project "healthy children in sound communities". During the past few months all local responsibles involved in this project (schools, sport clubs, health centres and community administrations) completed the plannings and consulted their partners (school authorities, district health authorities) and with the beginning of the new school year the pilot phase has started. During this pilot phase school-related curricula for offers in sport lessons and social sciences in primary schools should be developed and completed in the course of the school year with specific activity and sport offers and selected topics on health suppport and nutrition. Among these are also activity and sport offers for all pupils in the afternoon as well as practical information events on topics such as "activity and health", "nutrition and cooking" and "nutrition and health" for parents and other participants in this project.

Indian Olympic Academy and the WGI agree on a mutual cooperation
Essen, June 22nd, 2007 The Director of the Indian Olympic Academy, Prof. Dr. Jiltendra Singh Naruka and Prof. Dr. Roland Naul of the WGI, agreed on a wide-reaching cooperation between both institutions for the next coming years. In this cooperation for science and research on Olympic education studies also the University of New Delhi (DU) and the Universitiy of Duisburg-Essen (DUE), being the universities of both professors, should be involved.
2nd German-Czech Symposium for Sport Science in Velen on April 27-29, 2007
Following the symposium in Prague in April 2005, the 2nd German-Czech symposium for sport science takes place in Velen. The WGI is cooperation partner of this symposium together with the European Acedamy of Sport, the Ministry for Schools and further Education of North Rhine-Westphalia, the State Sport Assocation of North Rhine-Westphalia, the German Sport University Cologne and the Charles-University of Prague. High-ranking representatives of the Czech sport science as well as representatives of ministerial and private organisations of school and youth sport of the Czech Republic will meet their German Colleagues on April 27 - 29, 2007 at the "Sport Castle" in Velen.
Thessaloniki, April 27-29, 2007: " A new generation changes the world"
The "International Federation of Olympic and Sport Education" (IFOSE") invited to this conference in Thessaloniki. This conference was concerned with the planning and implementation of a European research institute, task of which should be the research of the reasons and causes of unfair attitude in sports and the support of Olympic ideals in sport for children and young people. Dirk Hoffmann of the University of Duisburg-Essen participated as lecturer and presented the results of the projects of the WGI.
15th anniversary of the Willibald Gebhardt Institute e.V.
The Willibald Gebhardt Institute (WGI) was founded 15 years ago on May 5th, 1992 in Essen. The recently published new WGI-report 2004-2006 informs about the most important stations and developments on this way. On the occasion of this modest anniversary the WGI has planned and implemented several events for 2007, also together with trustees and partners. This series of conferences and meetings was opened in the course of the "Europe week" on May 14th, in the "Sport castle" at Velen with the event "Germany and Europe - one team in sport". On this occasion we reported, among others, on "15 years of research in Europe in the WGI" and conferred with local supporters and partners on the newest EU-project "Healthy Children in Sound Communities" (pls. see www.nrw2007.eu )
15th anniversary of the WGI - Publication of the 5th WGI - Report
Right in time for the 15th anniverary of the WGI we published the 5th WGI-Report in May 2007.In this report we present among others our main projects and their results from 2004-2006. In a short retrospective on the occasion of this modest anniversary we answer frequently asked questions on the institutional works and remind of the beginning of the foundation of the institute. Deanna Binder and Rolf Ge?mann appointed fellows, Essen, Dec. 12, 2006
At the annual meeting of the Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute Dr. Deanna Binder (Victoria, Canada) and StD. Rolf Geßmann (Cologne, Germany) were appointed fellows. Both scientists will support the respective research and development works of the Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute and its partners with their expertises with regard to the Olympic Education.
