Since 1980 I have been working as university professor for sport science and sport pedagogy at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.
Since 1992 I have been working as Director of the Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute, Essen, Germany.
I served on different international boards such as: chair person of the International Committee of Sport Pedagogy, 1992-1996; former Western European director of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) (2000-2004), Vice-president of the International Society of Comparative Physical Education and Sport (ISCPES) 1992–1996 and 2000-2004.
Membership in various commission / expert groups
During the past years I collaborated in various national and international commissions and expert groups as an active member, especially to mention the expert group of the European Union on "EU-Physical Activity Guidelines” (2006–2008) and the IOC–Review Group for the textbook “Teaching Values. An Olympic Education Toolkit” (2006–2007)
Visiting professorships
The following universities invited me as their visiting professor: Martin Luther University at Halle/Saale Germany, University of Ghent (Belgium), Israeli Sport University in Netanya, Israel and the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.
Awards and Prices
In 2003 I was awarded the silver medal of the Charles University in Prague for my European studies in PE and sports and in 2008 the gold medal of the Czech Olympic Academy for my work on and support of Olympic education. In 2004 I received the ICSSPE Service Award during the Pre-Olympic Congress in Thessaloniki (Greece).
Publications
I published more than 350 reviewed papers in 10 different languages on physical education, Olympic education and health related youth sport activities. As an invited speaker I lectured on various international conferences and Olympic scientific congresses, including sessions of Olympic Pedagogy at the IOA (Olympia), as well as on behalf of national and EU–based bodies.
Editorial Works
I am Co-editor of three book series (German and American Studies in Sport, publisher: Waxmann-Verlag, Germany; Sport Science International, publisher: Lang-Verlag, Germany; Book Series of the Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute, publisher: Meyer & Meyer Verlag, Germany). Member of the editorial board of the following journals: European Review in Physical Education (UK); Acta Universitas Carolinae, Kinanthropologica and Ceska Kinantropologie (Czech Republic); African Journal for Physical, Health Education, Recreation & Dance (South Africa), New Medicine (Journal of the Polish Association for Health Education); International Journal of Sport and Health Science (Japan), International Sport Studies (Canada). Peer reviews for further journals: „Sportwissenschaft (Sport Science)“ (Germany), „Scandinavian Journal of Public Health“ (Denmark).
Teaching and Research fields
My teaching fields comprise in the broader sense children and youth sport in schools and sport clubs including historical (19th and 20th century), comparative (EU), didactical (secondary and primary education), motoric (motoric and fitness–related tests) and Olympic (education) fields.
My research fields align in general with the main areas of my teaching fields, considering especially P.E. and youth sport in Germany and in the EU.
Presently, I work together with my research assistants and on behalf of two consortiums (as the leader) on a state-wide evaluation study in North–Rhine Westphalia on “Movement, games and sport offers at open all-day schools” (2007–2011) and on a cross-boarder (between North–Rhine Westphalia and the Netherlands) Euregio intervention project “Healthy children in sound communities (NL-DE) ” (2008–2012) and on a new EU-study on "Healthy chidren in sound communities" (www.hcsc.eu). since January 2010.
